Why does Tantra involve the Genitals?

I had a conversation purely by chance last week. One of my friends went to Poland for a weekend and opted to get a massage. It was a tantric one and by not fully understanding what it entailed he pointed to the one on the board.

Unfortunate for him it was the Lingam massage, the tantra practice that worships the penis. Cue a normal likely lad telling the now naked masseuse to keep her hands off the trouser area and showing her his wedding ring.

When we stopped laughing (well, when I stopped laughing) the question was asked why tantric massage is based around the genitals. I like to hope I answered it well but he did seem none the wiser.

Tantric massage stems from the principles of Tantra, which is a philosophical and spiritual tradition originating from ancient India. Tantra itself holds within a wide range of beliefs and practices. Although its not focused solely on the genitals some forms have a lot of emphasis on the genital area.

Holistic

Tantra views the human body as a holistic entity. As the principles seek to balance and harmonise a persons aspects (physical, emotional and spiritual), yes the genitals are an important part of ones body and practitioners incorporate this into a massage to promote overall wellbeing and balance.

Energy

The Prana or Chi is the flow of energy around the body. Tantra beliefs are that stimulating this area, it is believed that the energy can be awakened and even re-channelled through other parts of the body. This promotes healing and pleasure by releasing physical and emotional blockages.

Spiritual

In Tantra, there is a strong emphasis on the connection between the physical and spiritual aspects of our mere existence. For some practitioners, the genitals and its surrounding area is regarded as a spiritual energy and a potential gateway to higher states of conscience. By working these areas, they aim to access and go beyond the range of this state.

Mindful

A tantric massage is a mindful experience. It also encourages presence and a deep connection between the giver and the receiver. The focus on the genitals gives a deeply intimate experience and gives a heightened awareness of your own body and sensations.

In conclusion

The sole purpose of a tantric massage doesn’t necessarily have to result in sexual arousal or gratification. Instead it is a therapeutical and spiritual practice that gives a deeper connection between two people and a greater understanding of their own bodies.

This is why it is important that a tantric massage should always be consensual and practiced in a respectful manner. Clear boundaries need to be set beforehand and a reputable and trained masseuse will guide you through the experience safely and ethically.

And certainly don’t go to an establishment where you point to a board like your ordering a curry.
