What is a Tantric Massage?

Tantric massage is a unique form of massage therapy that focuses on balancing the body’s energy, increasing intimacy, and promoting relaxation through sensual touch. But to begin with it can be a bit daunting.

If you are new to tantric massage and want to know more, then definitely read on. Here, we are going to talk you through the entire massage experience from preparing, the techniques used and the necessary aftercare afterwards.

Before we begin

The setting for any tantric massage experience should be key from the very beginning.

The atmosphere should be calm and serene. Your massage room or area should be dimly lit with candles or soft lighting.

There may also be soothing music playing in the background. Incense or essential oils are often used to create a calming and sensory ambiance. the temperature should also be not too hot or cold but comfortable.

The massage should take place on either a comfortable massage table or a soft mattress, covered with soft sheets or towels.

These sensory details are there to make you feel both comfortable and relaxing.


Set your intentions Your massage therapist is there to give you the best experience possible, but he/she is not psychic. Before you even begin your therapist will often discuss your intentions and any specific areas of tension or discomfort you may want to focus on. This is also an opportunity to express any boundaries or preferences that you have.

The correct mindset You may be encouraged at this stage to focus on breathing and clearing your mind. Tantric massage is meditative, so deep breathing and leaving behind your stresses and strains will help enhance your overall experience.

Clothing So you get the full experience of the skin contact experience during a tantric massage, you should really be nude. But this really depends on your comfort level and personal preference. Partially nude is a good second choice.

Again it’s essential to communicate your comfort level with your therapist beforehand. Some clients prefer to shower before the massage begins to soften the skin and kick start the whole relaxation process.

The actual massage will consist of:

  • Deep breathing or regulated breathwork (Pranayama) Guided breathing exercises are often integrated throughout your massage experience. This helps to increase oxygen flow, reduce stress, and deepen relaxation. You may be asked to synchronize your breath with the practitioner or focus on long, deep breaths to enhance energy flow.

  • Body Mapping/Exploration The masseuse will use their hands to explore your body’s energy centers, known as chakras, to identify areas of tension or blocked energy. This process is about understanding your body’s unique responses and helping them (and you) become more aware of where you hold your tension.

  • Sensual Touches These will consist of a mix of light, feather-like strokes and firmer, more deliberate touches. The strokes are designed to awaken the skin and stimulate the senses. This encourages a heightened state of awareness and presence. Some therapists use Lomi-Lomi, a Hawaiian massage technique characterized by long, flowing strokes, often using the forearms, to promote relaxation and energy flow.

  • Energy work The practitioner may focus on balancing your chakras, aiming to clear any blockages. This helps to promote the free flow of energy throughout your body. There may be Reiki or other energy healing practices incorporated. This works wonders to help you connect with your body’s natural healing processes.

  • Physical Sensations As your energy flows, you may experience sensations such as tingling, warmth, or even a gentle vibration. These are common responses as your body releases tension and embraces relaxation.
    The primary goal is a deep sense of relaxation. This is often accompanied by a reduction in physical tension and stress.

  • Emotional Release It is perfectly normal for emotions to surface during a tantric massage. This can include feelings of joy, sadness, or even laughter can arise. Emotional blockages are being released.

    A word of warning: This may make you laugh or cry. Don’t worry or be embarrassed: Emotional responses are seen as a natural part of the healing process. Also practitioners are typically well-prepared to handle such reactions with compassion and understanding.

After the Massage

Reflection After the session, you might be encouraged to sit in silence, meditate, or discuss your experience with the practitioner. This reflection period helps integrate the benefits of the massage into your daily life.

Hydrate Your masseuse may offer you water if you haven’t already got any. Water is recommended after any massage session to help flush out toxins. This helps support the body’s healing process.

Following up The practitioner may suggest exercises or meditation practices for you to continue at home, helping you maintain the relaxation and energy flow achieved during the massage.

They may also recommend incorporating mindfulness or yoga into your day to day routine. This enhances the long-term benefits of tantric massage.


Potential Misunderstandings & Considerations

  • Sexual Misconceptions Tantric massage does indeed involve sensual touch, but it is not inherently sexual. The focus is on energy and relaxation, not sexual gratification.

  • Comfort and Boundaries We did mention this at the start, but its so important we will say it again. Always communicate your comfort level and boundaries with the practitioner. A reputable therapist will respect your preferences and ensure a safe, respectful environment.
